Faith Challenge provides the opportunity for students to prepare for confirmation and membership in the United Methodist Church. To participate in Faith Challenge, students must be in, at least, eighth grade. In addition to participating in a small group, students must also meet requirements in the area of worship, fellowship, service, and church history.
Small Groups: Students meet in a small group format for ten weeks to explore issues of faith, theology, belief, history and church polity. Each group is led by one male and one female adult.
Worship: The worship life at Asbury is active and diverse. Students are encouraged to attend several of the worship experiences that Asbury offers and write up their thoughts on at least two of them. Students are encouraged to attend these services with their families, or other members of their small group.
Fellowship: It is important to be in fellowship with other Christians, and know what it feels like to be surrounded by a family of believers that really love you. Therefore, we require all Faith Challenge participants to attend at least one youth sponsored retreat, and two evenings of youth group. This allows students to experience first hand the community that the youth of Asbury have.
Service: As we look at the life of Jesus; He served others. As we look to become disciples of Christ, we must serve others as well. All Faith Challenge students are expected to complete at least one service project, either individually, or with their small group.
Church History: Students participate in a trip to Old St Georges Methodist Church in Philadelphia, the oldest continuously meeting United Methodist congregation.
At the completion of all these requirements, the student will have a one on one interview with either the Director of Youth Ministry, or a pastor at Asbury. The purpose of this meeting is to confirm the student's intent to become a member of Asbury and the United Methodist Church. The students will then be confirmed, with their class in front of the Asbury congregation.
